From the early years of the foundation of the Greek state, preserving the memory of the Revolution has been a primary concern of the protagonists of the Greek Revolution.
13 brass masks of the fighters of 1821, which belong to the National Historical Museum’s collection, are on display in the Memory of the War section of the permanent collection of the annexe , titled “The Greek War of Independence – 1821”.
These masks were cast in brass in the last decade of the 20th century from the gypsum molds of the faces of the fighters, which were donated to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece in 1886 by the School of Fine Arts.
The interest in the eternalization of human existence and of the image of the historical figures of Greek independence, together with their history and their likeness, constitute a memorial site of the war of 1821 and are considered valuable elements of historical memory.
